Risk assessment

During the first European ballast water study a simple risk assessment scheme was developed to assess the invasion potential of the non-indigenous species during the study which was published in 1996. This approach was based on temperature and salinity match of donor and source regions.

In cooperation with colleagues from 5 countries, Dr. Gollasch developed the first risk assessment approach for species invasions in the Baltic Sea published in 1999. The study was prepared for the Nordic Council of Ministers, Copenhagen. The account is available in the Download section.

Recently he was contracted by HELCOM and prepared together with Erkki Leppäkoski, Abo University, Turku, Finland a risk assessment approach of ballast water mediated species introductions – a Baltic Sea approach.

His PhD is world-wide the first thesis based on ballast water sampling.
